The Rind: Safe to Feed
The rind is the green part just under the flesh. Many people throw it away after eating the flesh, but it is also good for the skin and can be used to wash hands and face. The rind is less sweet and has less water than the flesh, but enough for a hamster. It is the best part to feed, but still not too much at once, and it gives some cooling relief.
The Seeds: Safe to Feed
Watermelon has many seeds; many owners know cats and dogs should not eat too many, but hamsters can eat some and enjoy them. Pick out the seeds, wash them, and sun-dry for one or two days to use as a snack. Seeds benefit the lungs and stomach and are high in protein like sunflower seeds, but also not too many.
Cautions
Many people eat iced watermelon in summer, but hamsters absolutely must not have it, so after eating the iced flesh let the rind return to room temperature before giving it, or it may cause diarrhea and badly hurt the gut. A little rind helps cool the hamster in summer; if the owner does not like watermelon, other fruits also cool them. When feeding fruit, avoid parts like apple cores, or serious trouble may follow. If the hamster dislikes fruit, ensure plenty of water in summer and offer vegetables now and then.
