1. Rising temperatures — how to change bedding?

When the weather warms up, many owners are quick to swap a hamster’s paper cotton or batting for cooler wood shavings. There is no need to rush: you can reduce the original 5 cm of bedding to about 3 cm and leave just a few cotton balls. That way the hamster can come out to play when hot and retreat to its warm nest when cold. Removing all warm bedding the moment temperatures rise can easily make the hamster catch a chill, since temperatures may drop again.

2. Large day-night temperature gaps make colds most likely

With big daily temperature swings, keep the hamster warm or it may catch a cold. When both temperature and humidity fluctuate sharply, it is normal for a hamster to sleep in its urine sand during the day — do not strip away too much bedding, because it still needs warmth at night.

If a hamster catches a cold from the chill, treat it promptly. You can give it a small amount of a probiotic (live-culture) powder; if it has diarrhea, cooked apple can help ease it. But if diarrhea is severe, take it to a veterinarian immediately to avoid more serious problems.

3. When to switch to summer supplies?

Most regions do not truly heat up until after the Qingming festival, so you can gradually introduce summer items such as a ceramic hideout, cooling pad, and wood shavings from late April. Some owners like to use tofu cat litter for hamsters, but it crumbles easily, creating dust and breeding bacteria — so it is better to use products specifically designed for hamsters.

Season changes are also a high-risk period for hamster illness, so owners must be especially careful — particularly during the spring and autumn transitions. Do not rush to change bedding, or the hamster may easily catch a chill. Understand your hamster’s habits well so you can care for it better.
