Medicated Baths for Dog Folliculitis: Which Product to Use

Folliculitis is mainly caused by bacteria or fungi and is a common skin disease marked by inflamed follicles. Bacteria most often enter the follicle through a cut in the skin and cause inflammation, but other causes such as underlying skin conditions, mite infection and endocrine imbalance also play a role.

For all dogs, folliculitis can signal a dip in the body’s immunity. Most dogs over five start showing skin-disease signs in autumn, so timely treatment is essential to avoid serious problems.

2 Choosing a Medicated Bath

The choice depends on the specific skin problem — whether the folliculitis is from simple bacterial infection or mixed with fungal or parasitic causes. Have the dog examined at a veterinary hospital with a skin scraping; severe cases may need blood tests to confirm the cause before a bath product is selected.

By pathogen: 1. Bacterial folliculitis is usually treated with an antibacterial or antiseptic shampoo. 2. Fungal causes can use itraconazole, nystatin or antifungal shampoos. 3. Mite-caused folliculitis typically uses amitraz or a mite-killing shampoo — rinse thoroughly, because amitraz is toxic if the dog licks it.

3 Medicated Bath Steps

Prepare a suitably sized tub, dilute the bath product per its instructions, wet the dog’s skin, soak or massage for 10–15 minutes, towel dry, then blow dry completely. Drying is essential — a damp coat worsens skin disease.

4 Additional Care

Besides the bath, give oral antibiotics such as cefadroxil to fight infection and prevent folliculitis from progressing to pyoderma. A topical skin spray and zinc-oxide ointment add strong antibacterial action and help tighten the skin.
