Cats get age-related spots or moles from melanin deposition, usually on mouth, eyelids, ears. This spot has a formal name: lentigo simplex.

These signs come from a benign pigmented skin condition—painless, itch-free, unfelt by the cat, so it may never notice the change.

2. What causes black spots?

1. Increased melanocyte activity

Lentigo simplex comes from increased melanocyte activity causing deposition; also a sign of aging, reminding owners to care more attentively!

2. Genetic influence

It is somewhat hereditary, most often in orange-gene cats, also cream and silver cats.

3. Features of lentigo simplex

Plaques about 1–10mm, possibly growing; round or semicircular, few irregular; flat or slightly raised; yellow or brown; increase with age; usually on lips, nose, eye area, sometimes paw pads.

4. Can it turn into melanoma?

Usually freckles do not turn malignant for no reason. But if a plaque shows raised surface with blurred edges, or grows fast with itching, redness, or swelling, see a vet promptly—even a normal check brings peace of mind.
