Redness of the skin around a cat’s spay incision, if the wound has healed well with no other abnormalities, is fairly common in obese cats with thick fat. But the wound inflammation should be treated actively and licking avoided, keeping the belly dry to stop skin eczema from spreading.

For this, gently wipe the area with iodine, then apply a pet-specific anti-inflammatory ointment along with oral anti-inflammatory medication to control infection. Note that an Elizabethan collar must be put on to prevent scratching and licking. If there is no inflammation later, normal care will lead to gradual recovery in about five to seven days if done well; if it still does not recover, see a vet for professional help.
