What happens if a dog eats cured/salty meat?

A dog eating salty cured meat may show thirst, excessive drinking, vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration. Because dogs metabolize salt very poorly, and cured meat uses large amounts of salt, excess intake irritates the gut and causes vomiting and diarrhea. In severe cases it can even cause salt poisoning, with thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, tremors, and even coma.

In addition, large salt intake burdens the kidneys and affects normal filtration, possibly causing acute or chronic kidney disease. Long-term excess salt can raise blood pressure and burden the heart and blood vessels, leading to heart disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular problems.
