Dog hydrocephalus may be caused by congenital brain abnormalities, infection, tumors, brain hemorrhage, or trauma. Some dogs are born with brain abnormalities such as abnormal ventricle size or underdeveloped meninges. This is generally hard to cure and only the symptoms can be controlled with medication.

In addition, hydrocephalus may result from brain inflammation, brain tumors blocking normal fluid circulation and absorption, excess fluid buildup in the ventricles, or damage to brain structures.
