If the wound has already scabbed, just keep it away from water and dry and clean, and inflammation is unlikely. If it hasn’t scabbed, first trim the surrounding fur, rinse with saline, and wipe with iodine for disinfection.

After applying iodine, wait 1-2 minutes, then blot the excess with cotton to avoid skin irritation. Finally, fit an Elizabethan collar so the dog can’t lick the wound and cause infection.

My dog's scar stayed clean because I kept it dry, let it scab, and put the cone on so he couldn't lick it raw. I'd trim fur around it, rinse with saline if open, and dab iodine, then leave it alone. Mine healed without inflammation because I didn't fuss at it, the e-collar was the key, a scar that stays dry and untouched is a scar that won't get angry, don't let him reopen it.
