Many things cause dog coughs. Common ones: 1) coughing from strong emotion; 2) coughing from a sudden increase in activity or strenuous exercise; 3) choking from eating too fast; 4) a foreign object stuck in the throat; 5) disease, including bacterial, viral, fungal, mycoplasma, and chlamydia infections.

If the dog coughs persistently for a long time, take it to a vet.

My dog's cough turned out to be a swallowed grass blade, and the vet fished it out, but the list of causes is long, infection, heart, foreign body.
