Why does my Samoyed dig at the ground?

There are many reasons a Samoyed digs: instinctive behavior, temperature regulation, venting emotions, filing its nails, territorial instinct, and destructive behavior. Dogs have a natural tendency to bury food, and a Samoyed may instinctively bury food, toys, or other items to dig up later.

Second, in hot conditions a Samoyed may dig to find a cool surface to lower its temperature. Also, when a Samoyed feels anxious or irritable, it may dig to relieve its emotions.
