A male cat licking a female cat’s rear can have several reasons. During estrus the male may chase the female and lick her rear to gather her scent. Among cats, a higher-ranking cat uses licking to mark the status of others, and cats living together may lick each other to recognize their relationship. Licking the rear is also a social gesture of friendliness.
