A puppy’s umbilical hernia may be caused by improper umbilical-cord handling, congenital incomplete umbilical development, external force, or increased abdominal pressure. If the mother dog bites the cord too short, or it is cut too short by hand, the umbilical opening may not close normally and a hernia forms. Some breeds may have genetically incomplete umbilical development. Trauma to the area or increased abdominal pressure can also cause a hernia.
