As spawning nears, the female’s belly visibly swells and her color becomes brighter. Males constantly chase and nip her and rub her belly; stimulated, she becomes very active and swims faster—a sign she’s about to spawn.

Goldfish usually spawn from 4 to 10 am and need over 5 hours. After the female lays eggs, the male fertilizes them.
