What happens if a dog has dry eye (keratoconjunctivitis sicca)?

Canine dry eye mainly shows as congested, thickened, or edematous conjunctiva. Because the cornea lacks tears, the eye becomes very dry and cloudy. Left untreated long-term, it can cause corneal ulcers, perforation, and even vision loss or blindness.

Also, because the eye is painful and uncomfortable, the dog may become unusually restless, anxious, or lose its appetite.

If dry eye appears, take the dog to a vet promptly. After diagnosis, medication or surgery can be used; common medicines include artificial tears, anti-inflammatory drops, and immunosuppressants. Surgical treatment transplants the parotid duct to the conjunctiva so saliva replaces tears and prevents dryness.
