Arowana drop-eye is generally divided into three parts:

I. Congenital drop-eye. Some arowana are congenital; for this, keepers should take measures to improve it as much as possible.

II. In-tank factors

1. Feeding. Some keepers often feed dead small fish and shrimp, which sink straight to the bottom, forcing the arowana to swim down to find food. Since arowana prefer swimming near the surface, their eyes look down on the way to the bottom, easily causing drop-eye long-term.

2. Tank and water level height. If the tank or water level is too high, arowana active in the upper layer will frequently look down; too much downward looking long-term also causes drop-eye.

3. Reflective bottom plate. Some keepers use reflective materials for the bottom; once lights are on, the bottom shows reflections that the curious arowana keeps watching, long-term causing drop-eye.

4. Top scene setup. Many keepers put a lid on top, which blocks the arowana from looking up and may cause drop-eye. Even a transparent lid may fail to attract upward gaze.

III. Out-of-tank factors

1. Light influence. Poor tank placement or prolonged nearby lighting makes the arowana uncomfortable; to avoid the light it keeps swimming down or looking down, causing drop-eye.

2. External influence. Arowana living monotonously in a tank may be drawn to look down by small animals or short children passing by, eventually causing drop-eye.

3. Food choice. Some keepers feed high-fat food long-term to fatten and shape the fish quickly, but this rapidly accumulates eye fat. Since tank fish need not forage and have limited range, they exercise little, accelerating drop-eye.
