How to Prevent Turtle Enteritis

Early prevention is the key to stopping turtle enteritis, so maintain good preventive care and lower the chance of illness. The main measures:

1. Clean and disinfect the pond. For pond housing, wash the pond with quicklime (calcium oxide) at 50–75 kg per mu before introducing turtles; spray nesting areas with a 125 g/m² quicklime slurry. For tank or container housing, disinfect the container thoroughly—new or old—before use and disinfect it periodically.

2. Improve water quality. Keep pond or tank water clean and clear. Every half month, dissolve 40 g/m² quicklime in water and spread it across the whole pond. Promptly remove debris and droppings to prevent the water from deteriorating.

3. Strengthen husbandry. Feed fresh, clean food; choose feed suited to the turtle’s diet and vary it while meeting nutritional needs to keep appetite and intake up. Feed on a fixed schedule, spot, quality, and amount; never feed spoiled food, which pollutes water and harms health. Watch the weather and heat or cool the enclosure as needed.

4. Herbal prevention. From May to September, feed a Euphorbia humifusa (DiJinCao) decoction every 20 days—150 g dried or 700 g fresh herb per 50 kg of turtle body weight—cooled and mixed into the feed.

Treatment: The key is to isolate and treat early to stop worsening. Herbal therapy is the main approach, but if the turtle has lost its appetite entirely, inject berberine (HuangLianSu) or houttuynia (YuXingCao) solution. As long as the turtle will still eat, treat it with the herbal liquid by mouth.
