My hamster has small white spots on its eye

When a hamster has white spots on its eye, it may be keratitis or cataracts. Keratitis is generally caused by heat or inflammation; try anti-inflammatory eye drops 3-5 times a day for about a week to see results.

In addition, older or diabetic hamsters may develop cataracts, though they can occur at any age and some are tiny with little effect on vision. Early symptoms often include accidentally bumping the cage walls or not using the ladder and wheel; to compensate for reduced vision, hamsters rely more on enhanced smell and acute hearing. When you cannot handle it yourself, take the hamster to an exotic-pet hospital for examination and treatment promptly.
