What is a ‘water dog’ (otter)?

The ‘water dog’ is the otter, a semi-aquatic mammal often active in rivers, lakes, streams, and on their banks, and sometimes seen in rice fields or calm water. Otters are nocturnal with a keen smell and are good at swimming and diving.

Otters eat mainly fish, and also frogs, crabs, water birds, mice, shrimp, crabs, and shellfish, sometimes some plant food. They like to dive from the bank or river cliff to chase fish schools; ambush is their common hunting method.
