Adult blood parrots are brightly blood-red all over, plump and varied in shape, gentle in nature, and have fast growth, strong disease resistance, and good temperature tolerance, making it one of the more popular ornamental fish.

A special trait of the blood parrot is that male blood parrots are sterile, and female parrot fish can only hybridize with other fish species.
