A red-footed tortoise matures late, generally breeding only around 5 years after birth. In breeding season it becomes very active and competes with the same sex.

Mature tortoises can breed any time of year but mate more in late summer and early autumn. They lay 2 to 4 clutches yearly, 5 to 15 eggs each, with about a 120-day incubation.
