With timely treatment, dogs with osteosarcoma generally live about a year, and some 5 to 6 years, depending on how far the tumor has spread. Osteosarcoma is malignant; treatment removes the invaded bone and uses chemotherapy to slow spread, usually amputation plus chemo. It is incurable and may still metastasize after treatment; amputation is only palliative, and once metastasis occurs the dog declines rapidly.
