1 Routine Goldfish Care

Daily management is essential even with a fully automated tank—always watch whether the fish are behaving normally and respond to changes in the environment and the fish’s condition.

Place the tank sensibly

Position the tank for easy care, good light and stable temperature, while making it part of your interior decor. Prioritize environmental conditions that strongly affect health: place it by a south window for some sunlight, but shield it from harsh direct sun with curtains when strong.

Prepare before stocking

  • Choose a properly sized container; clean and disinfect it, add sand or gravel, then fill with water stood open 1–2 days. Plant some aquatic plants. If using tap water, let it stand about 2 days to off-gas chlorine before use.
  • Select healthy fish; float the bag in the upper-middle of the tank until temperatures match, then release.
  • Don’t feed new fish immediately—wait 1–2 days to acclimate, then offer a little food and gradually increase by body weight.
  • Quarantine new arrivals in a separate container for about a week to check for disease before mixing with existing fish.

    • Control stocking density

    Keep density reasonable for fit fish and clean water. Density depends on breed, age, size, season, temperature, food, still versus flowing water, and depth. Give fish as much room as possible; overcrowding causes oxygen shortage (gasping at the surface) and even disease or death.

    Feed properly

    Feed on a fixed schedule and amount. With few fish, use live foods like daphnia and tubifex; for fry just starting, use single-celled organisms such as paramecium, or daphnia if unavailable. Regardless of stage, feed at set times and amounts based on fish state, water, weather and temperature—small frequent meals are best (every 3 hours if you can); otherwise feed once in the morning and once in the evening, with portions finished within an hour.

    Change water regularly

    Water quality strongly affects health—change water as it declines, but never all at once. Replace only 1/5 to 1/3 each time to avoid shocking the fish, and match the new water’s temperature to the tank. Periodically scrub the container, since waste builds up over time.
