1. Health problems they face

Premature puppies need special care in their first weeks to survive the danger period. They are tiny and prone to malnutrition—weigh them daily and supplement nutrition. Their body temperature runs low (poor self-regulation), so keep them warm to avoid pneumonia, which is fatal. They may also have poor blood supply and under-developed heart/kidneys; seek vet care if needed.

Later care depends on whether the mother lives. If she does, help her bond and nurse the pup. If she died or can’t feed, you take full responsibility.

Feeding

A mother may not produce milk right after premature birth. Prepare puppy formula, bottles and syringes in advance. Feed every few hours; weak pups may lack the strength to suck, so use a dropper. Mix formula with warm water—roughly 1 ml per 31.1 g of body weight—and adjust by weight. Monitor weight and watch the mother’s milk; once she produces, let her nurse. Feed her nutritious food (e.g. crucian carp soup) to support milk.

Keep warm

Premature pups can’t regulate temperature—keep them in a warm, steady environment such as an incubator, using a heating pad or hot-water bottle if needed, but avoid overheating (dehydration). Also keep surroundings quiet; newborns startle easily.

These pups are fragile—care must be attentive and thorough to maximize survival.
