1 Understanding and Bonding with Your Rabbit
Can rabbits understand human language?
A rabbit’s intelligence is roughly that of a 3-year-old child, so it can remember and understand some simple commands. If your rabbit ignores you, you’ve likely skipped training. With consistent, caring care, a rabbit will bond to you. Understanding is largely conditioned response: repeated language training teaches it what specific cues mean and the action to perform.
Start cue training while young—simple cues like ‘eat’ or ‘crate’ to shape behavior. Be patient; early on it will often ignore you, which is normal. Over time it learns. Keep sessions short but frequent to build recognition. Watch its behavior to understand it better and care for it well.
How to interact with your rabbit
Most rabbits enjoy moving, scratching, chewing, hiding and exploring.
First, offer safe toys based on its preferences. Rabbits also love playing with you—set up obstacle courses around favored treats so it explores and plays, satisfying curiosity and exercise needs.
Second, try a gentle ‘tug of war’ over food, but yield to the rabbit since it is weak—otherwise it may get upset.
Third, never force play. Open the cage and let it come out when ready. When it wants to play it signals—hanging on the cage, circling your legs, nudging and pulling—so respond positively.
Before it knows you, a rabbit may be nervous; use favorite treats to lower its guard. Once familiar, it becomes clingy rather than fearful.
Finally, be tolerant and patient. Never hit or scold it or take out frustration—once a rabbit fears you, it is hard to undo. Treat your cute companion kindly.
