Arowana Care Guide
π Summary
Arowana have many keepers, but they are delicate and timid, so good care is not easy. Here are some daily management tips that help keep arowana healthy.
1 Management Tips for Keeping Arowana
Management measures that help keep arowana.
1. Proper, Adequate Lighting
Good light drives the arowana’s metabolism and healthy growth; give it 4-8 hours of light a day. A red arowana also needs red light, added with a red plant lamp. On cloudy days with little sunlight, install a dedicated aquarium light above the tank, and choose the right background and light color for your arowana variety.
2. Regular Feeding
Fixed time, place, amount, and quality of food aids healthy growth. Set feeding frequency and quantity by the fish’s size and keep it regular, adjusting as it grows. Under 30 cm: 2-3 times a day; 30-45 cm: once a day; 45-55 cm: every other day; and so on.
3. Regular Water Changes
Set the change cycle and volume by the system’s capacity and stocking density to keep water stable and good. Generally change about one quarter of the water once a week.
4. Routine Water Testing
Check these regularly: Temperature: best 28-32 C; keep fluctuations within 2 C to avoid discomfort. Dissolved oxygen: above 5 mg/L. pH: arowana like slightly acidic to neutral water, pH 6.5-7.5; keep daily swing within plus or minus 0.2, stability matters most (5-8.5 is tolerable). Hardness: best 2-3 dH; lower it with activated carbon, boiling, soft-water resin, or adding distilled water to hard water. Chlorine: tap water is chlorinated, and chlorine harms arowana, so never use it directly. Let it stand 48 or more hours, or use a water conditioner for quick removal.
