Schnauzers are hunting dogs with strong ability, but need training for ideal results. In 15th-century Germany they guarded farms and occasionally helped hunt, and their agility and speed let them catch rats.

Today they are mainly pets: loyal, gentle, and intelligent, even able to watch children.
