Whether distemper is cured depends on the dog’s clinical signs, blood tests, and distemper virus antigen results together. The symptoms are many and the course is relatively long, about 1-3 months. After 30 days of infection, if the dog is stable with no neurologic signs, it has passed the most dangerous period.

But full virus clearance takes six months – a dog needs that long to completely expel the virus and be fully recovered. Until the virus is fully cleared, avoid taking the dog out, since its resistance is still low and it can easily relapse, catch other diseases, or infect other dogs.
