Before using the litter box a cat will meow, raise its tail, circle the room, sniff around and scratch pads or litter. Normally it goes to the box on its own.

If it does not know how, put some of its urine on top of the litter and let it smell. Scoop daily and change the litter regularly so the cat does not refuse a dirty box.
