Our Teddy’s tail is bleeding after a failed at-home docking–will wrapping it overnight cause infection?

This situation suggests that improper timing or method caused circulatory blockage in the dog’s tail. The best docking window is the first 1 to 7 days after birth; if the dog is older, the developed nerves cause pain and docking failure and wound infection. The owner can observe: if there is no pus or necrotic wound, disinfect and care for it.

First clean the dirt and blood at the docking site with iodine or hydrogen peroxide, then sprinkle appropriate medicinal powder or apply antibiotic ointment to fully cover the surface, and lightly wrap with gauze fixed by medical tape. Do not wrap too long to avoid infected necrosis; change medicine and gauze every 6 hours. Use an Elizabethan collar to prevent licking or tail shaking, and keep the wound clean and dry. If no improvement after 3 days of care, take the dog to the vet for treatment or surgery.
