A starved dog is weak, unsteady, may raid the trash or bark often, or lie motionless in a corner. Prolonged hunger can cause low blood sugar and even death.

Long starvation also leads to binge-eating that irritates the gut and may cause gastroenteritis. Feed on a fixed schedule: adults at least 1-2 times daily, seniors 2-3 times.
