Ascites does not necessarily mean death. If caused by long-term malnutrition, it is usually curable by draining fluid and adding nutrition, and the dog improves soon. If caused by liver disease, peritonitis, or bladder rupture, survival is lower but not certain; timely treatment is key.
With mild ascites, the chance of full recovery is fairly high.
