The best breeding window is days 10-15 of heat, when the female usually accepts mounting and conception is easier. Earlier she refuses and only artificial guidance works. In early heat she bleeds and swells but rejects the male; in mid-heat bleeding lessens and, if she shifts her tail aside when her rump is touched, she is willing to mate.
