How often should a cat’s anal glands be expressed?

Healthy adult cats normally do not need their anal glands expressed, because they release some secretion on their own during bowel movements. Only older cats, those lacking exercise, or cats with chronic soft stools may need help, since their glands may not empty properly.

For middle-aged and senior cats, you can express the anal glands about every two months to help release the buildup.
