Hamsters can start having babies at 3-4 months old. Their first heat occurs around 2 months, but at that age their bodies are not yet mature; breeding too early causes great strain on the mother and the pups may have low survival rates and poor constitution. It is therefore best to wait until the hamster is older before mating it.

Generally, a pregnant hamster gives birth 15-16 days later, followed by a nursing period of 20-25 days. Once the pups grow up they should be separated, otherwise the hamsters may fight and get injured.
