Expert Answer

FIP is caused by mutation of the coronavirus inside the body, and the exact reason for the mutation is not yet clear. Most cats carry some amount of coronavirus, especially outdoor cats, about 80 percent of which carry it.

But a small amount of coronavirus does not affect the cat; only when the cat is stimulated or affected by other causes does the coronavirus mutate, leave the intestine, and invade other internal organs, causing FIP.

A cat with FIP shows reduced appetite, ascites, wasting, and breathing difficulty, and must be taken to a vet promptly for specific drugs like GS-441524.
