First, guppies are tropical fish that do well in water of 24–28°C, which isn’t far from the preferences of shrimp.

However, guppies have a certain aggression and may eat small shrimp if kept together. Also, because guppies are fairly small, keeping them with large shrimp can lead to the guppy being attacked and injured.

Finally, shrimp breed rapidly; if kept with guppies during breeding season, the newborn shrimp fry simply become another food source for the guppies.

Therefore, it’s generally not recommended to keep guppies and shrimp together. If you must, choose ordinary small shrimp such as ghost shrimp, red cherry shrimp, or sakura shrimp. Besides, compared with shrimp, guppies get along better with other livebearing poeciliids such as moonfish, red swordtails, black mollies, and golden sailfin mollies, which makes keeping them easier. 1. Water quality management: Both guppies and shrimp are demanding about water quality. Change water regularly, use a filter, and control feeding frequency to keep the water within healthy parameters.

2. Spatial layout: Give guppies and shrimp enough living space to avoid crowding, which causes stress and fighting. Set up distinct zones in the tank and plant more aquatic vegetation so fish and shrimp each have their own territory.

3. Food supply: Guppies and shrimp eat different foods and need suitable food provided separately. Guppies can be fed bloodworms and aquatic plants; shrimp can be fed plankton and daphnia. Keep the food supply ample and varied to meet their growth needs.

4. Watch their interaction: During keeping, closely monitor how guppies and shrimp get along. If fighting occurs, act promptly—rearrange the tank layout or add more hiding spots—to reduce conflict.
