Can dogs empathize with humans?

Dogs can empathize with humans. Canines that have lived with people for a long time develop the ability to share human emotions, and some dogs bond so strongly with their owners that they will step in to protect them when danger strikes and are always looking for ways to repay their owner’s care — breeds such as the Chinese rural dog, the Labrador Retriever and the Golden Retriever are good examples.

Labradors are especially in tune with people. They can sense their owner’s moods, and after enough time together they understand what their owner needs and will even help out on their own. Golden Retrievers are highly intelligent and also read emotions well; when their owner is feeling down, they quietly stay close by — a thoughtful, comforting presence.
