Why Do Cats Steal Things?

1 Hoarding Instinct
Wild cats cached extra food for lean times; domestic cats no longer need to, but the instinct remains, redirected from food to interesting objects they hide in a spot they consider safe.
2 Boredom or Stress Relief
A bored or neglected cat may carry off small items — toys, slippers, socks, towels, empty wrappers, plastic bags — which fire its hunting or play drive. Spend a little time each day interacting and playing so the cat feels attended to.
3 Watch for Swallowed Objects
Stealing is mostly harmless, but guard against swallowed objects. Signs of an esophageal blockage include pawing at the mouth, head shaking, painful repeated swallowing, vomiting or regurgitation, poor appetite and lethargy, unusual crying, possible esophageal infection, and forceful coughing.
4 Compulsive Behavior
In rare cases, stealing comes from a compulsive disorder — repetitive, anxious behavior. Such cats may hoard constantly to ease their distress. If stealing persists, keep dangerous items out of reach and keep up daily play.
