Dog labor generally takes about 5 to 10 hours. The length is affected by several factors. First, the number of fetuses: delivering one puppy averages about half an hour, so more puppies mean longer labor. Second, the mother’s pushing strength: if she is weak and has difficulty, labor is prolonged. Finally, fetal position matters; an abnormal position can also lengthen labor and may even cause dystocia.
