Can a cat’s lip ulcer heal on its own?

A cat’s lip ulcer generally cannot heal on its own, so it is best to treat it promptly with a pet-specific oral spray. If it is severe, take the cat to a veterinary clinic to check for infectious diseases such as herpes or calicivirus. A lip ulcer may first be a sign of poor nutrition and vitamin B deficiency, so watch the cat’s daily diet, avoid feeding the same single food for long periods, and supplement with a multivitamin. Second, stomatitis can also cause lip ulcers, so besides medication keep the cat’s mouth clean and regularly wash and disinfect its food and water bowls. Finally, if the cat has a lip ulcer together with a runny nose, red swollen eyes, fever, loss of appetite or lethargy, consider a viral infection and take it to the clinic promptly.
